3 Stars Not much help unless you want to write for kindle.
This was a bit disappointing. I learned as much from the helps that came with my kindle 2 as I did from this article. It does give lots of tips if you want to write a book or article to submit to kindle for publication, which seems to be what the writer did with this very publication.

2 Stars What You Already Know in Repetitive Prose
Most of the information in this book is included in the free guide that was included on my new Kindle 2. The first half of the book reads like a an advertisement for the Kindle. The second half is like a beginner’s guide to using the web. I am a happy new Kindle user, but I was not impressed with this guide.

The writing is generally more casual and entertaining than a typical user manual, but it’s also poorly structured and puzzlingly repetitive at times. For example, the author explains how the Kindle 2 has two built-in speakers but also can be used with headphones in four different sections of the book. Do those count as 4 of the 500 alleged “tips and tricks”? Many other features of the Kindle are described several times in the book. This actually confused a new Kindle user like myself; at first I assumed I was accidentally hitting some button that caused me to re-read sections of the book.

This was not a pleasant book to read for that reason, but there will be some value for some users. The book contains a long list of web links (in desperate need of editing) that includes few helpful pointers to resources for free (public domain) e-books. This information will be helpful for many new e-book readers like myself, but it’s also probably nothing that I could not have learned with a few web searches such as “free ebooks”

4 Stars very helpful
recommend for any beginers with the kindle. Very helpful. A little too much info on stuff I would never used but Good book

4 Stars Complete User’s Guide to amazing amazon kindle 2
What I’ve read of it so far is good to know and helpful. I’ve been spending most reading time using kindle to read my books. I bought this one to have in case I needed any help with things it can do.

1 Star 1.99 rip off
Even at $1.99 it is a rip off. Nothing but links and some of them don’t even work.

It says you can e-mail him for a list of the links which can be used from your computer. Don’t waste your time asking for this; I have e-mailed 4 times and NEVER GOT A REPLY!!!!

Save your money; wish I had!!

5 Stars Amazing Amazon Kindle
A great guide book with more information and things you can do with your Kindle. It is only for the original Kindle 1.

5 Stars Easy to understand instructions for Kindle users!
I absolutely loved learning about my Kindle that I have been only reading on since I got it a year ago. Now, I learned how to download a book my son has been writing, and if he chooses to publish it down the road, I have the step by step instructions for that also! I don’t learn easily, but Stephen has made this very easy! I know things even my tech savvy kids don’t know yet and they have a Kindle also! Thank you!

5 Stars Great product
Great and wonderful book. Full of useful info on the Kindle that you could not get any other way. I am making much better use of my Kindle with the help of this book.

1 Star Useless
There is absolutely nothing in this book which helps me use my Kindle. I do wonder how I could have been taken in by this. I read the instructions most carefully, no helpful hint turned out to work on my Kindle. I do have the Kindle 2.0. What a waste of money.

5 Stars A Big Help For Kindle Users
It’s an electronic gizmo, right? Here’s an easy way to become familiar with it and explore all the possibilities without unguided experimentation.

Good guide, well written, easy to understand!

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Worth Every Penny
I’m not going to go into a long “how great it is” documentary here, but keep it short and simple – when I was struggling with publishing my books on the Kindle to sell on the Amazon store, I bought this book plus two others to help me bridge the gap: after all, the instructions from the Amazon and MOBI websites leave a lot to be desired or you wouldn’t be looking at this book to see if it is for you, would you? This book was head and shoulders better than the other offerngs I purchased.

I found the text easy enough for me to follow along with great examples so you can have your own “aha” moments and figure out how to do a particular task. My books were fairly straight-forward and this book released me from the hours of trying to find the right html code. FOr the more detailied books, say if you had tables and other items you are trying to format for the Kindle screen, there are sections for it, too.

Bottom line is this is a tremendous resource and worth every penny – that is, unless you like staying frustrated spending hours on Bing or Google searches in an effort to find out the answer!

5 Stars BEST path to best Kindle/eBooks
This book’s author, Joshua Tallent, has a SUPERB combination of Kindle-and-other-eBooks expertise, ability to sense what the author needs to know and explain it clearly and concisely, and interest in enabling the author to get what the author wants.

Especially for books with graphics or other special requirements, he is the path to best results. Example: for my diagrams-based book, his combination of expertise and make-it-best dedication has produced optimum graphic presentation for the very different displays of (a) the various Kindles and (b) the iPhone and other color devices current and coming, which have quite different gradations of grays.

(If you want to see how this was done, on either Kindle or iPhone or each, download the free sample at Understanding a Company’s Finances: Look at financial reports, see a FINANCIAL PICTURE of the business. Or for another example of Joshua’s expertise in delivering graphics on Kindle, and Kindle/iPhone, see the free sample of Washington State Road Atlas.)

5 Stars I was lost – but now I’m found
Before I read this book, I tried to convert a book into Kindle format, and succeeded only half-way. Despite extensive googling, and questions posted on message boards, I was lost. (I have written software for over twenty years and am conversant in XML, HTML and CSS. I thought that would be enough…) Thus I had very specific goals when I purchased this book for my Kindle2:

1) How do I create a TOC?

2) How do I create navigational waypoints?

3) How can I make my illustrations look their best on the Kindle 2?

This book answered those questions well, plus many others that I didn’t know I ought to be asking.

There is no fluff in this book. Every page has useful and timely information. Mr. Tallent writes clearly and his book is well organized. (And he included Perl scripts, so he must be smart!)

5 Stars An Excellent Guide to Kindle Formatting
This book is the definitive guide to Kindle formatting and publishing. If you are going to produce your own Kindle Book, buy this book and read it before you start – it will save you a tremendous amount of time later. Read Chapter 8 – Previewing and Publishing – first, especially the explanation of Digital Rights Management (DRM) on page 136 at the end of the Chapter. This chapter explains that if you want to 1) do a final check of your Kindle manuscript on your own Kindle before you publish and 2) submit it with DRM, you must use the Mobipocket Creator to create a Mobipocket ebook to submit to the Amazon DTP rather than simply submitting an html file to the Amazon DTP. If you don’t know why this is important, you will after reading the book.

5 Stars A Good Guide to HTML and Kindle Formatting
I ordered this book because I was contemplating converting my stories to the Kindle format. I already have knowledge of HTML and found this book touched all the basics and a lot more. If you are into formating your own books for epublishing, and you have little or no previous knowledge of HTML, then this is a very good book to get. It looks at how to convert basic text from word, or pdf or just about anything, into HTML which can be viewed with a web browser, but with a particular emphasis on Kindle formatting. There are also references to MobiPocket, which is a good alternative to Kindle, and you can down load the software for free, allowing you to see the progress of your ebook. There are also tips on setting out the text for poetry and things like that. There is a lot of good stuff in this book, well worth getting hold of. I know, I did.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars An Excellent Guide
Publish Your Book on Amazon Kindle by Michael R. Hicks is an excellent guide to accomplishing the goal set forth in the title. I’m certain that anyone trying to publish on Kindle would encounter difficulty without the clear, detailed instructions provided by Mr. Hicks. It should be particularly helpful to anyone not versed in computer procedures.

4 Stars Well done
Short but covers the ground very well. Clear explanations and details. Useful for novices and experienced writers.

Unfortunately the print version lost it a star. Many instances of part of a line blurred or top or bottom of letters missing were an irritant. This is not the author’s fault!

I did try to get the mobipocket version first. No luck, but that may just be a temporary glitch.

5 Stars Packed with info! A must read!
Well done! This book is terrific. It is not just about creating an Amazon Kindle book, but tells you the best way to create an ebook for sale on Amazon and other websites as well. Michael’s advice on using the mobipocket creator software to create a prc (kindle compatible) file rather than simply uploading an html file to the Amazon DTP is right on. This method gives you more options to sell your books on other websites – not just Amazon. He walks you through the mobipocket software with ease. Also, the information about selling your books to other websites through mobipocket is well written and makes a complicated subject easy to understand. For those of you who like to do it yourself, alot of help from those who have already done it makes it easy.

5 Stars Publish Your Book On The Amazon Kindle: A Practical Guide
I have started using the book and have found parts of it to be very helpful. I find it easy to follow the terms and directions contained in the book. I learned that you can “jump” from one part of the book to another if you have a single problem or two that you are dealing with and resolve them quickly through the content or examples.

I recommend the book to any who are interested in publishing in the manner that to me is the future of the publishing business. Twenty years of less from now your local book store will carry and provide the ability to check out a book and then by plugging in download it.

And this book can help you get in near the ground floor.

4 Stars very good basic guide
Michael R. Hicks does a very good job of guiding a beginner through the file conversion process. Especially helpful was the basic HTML coverage. Before this, I knew nothing about HTML except that it was a type of format favored by websites. Now I can go into my ebook and make changes to the layout with this useful tool. I do wish he would have gone a little deeper into the subject instead of referring us to outside sources, but he got me started in the right direction.

Two things I discovered while converting my first book (which I hope to be uploading to Amazon soon) with MobiPocket Creator:

The very useful HTML command <br/> which inserts a space between two lines of text when you absolutely have to have it and the Creator ignores the normal paragraph space.

This was a big issue for me because I use Word 2007: MP Creator does not currently accept MS Office Word 2007 format (.docx) so you need to save your book as a Word 2003 (.doc) OR which I reccommend because I had to do MUCH less tweaking afterword, save your file as a WEBPAGE (FILTERED). This converts the file to HTML right in MS Word (so when searching for it from MP Creator browse for HTML files instead of Word files.) I had much less trouble getting the book layout the way I wanted it this way.

I hope Michael will address these issues in upcoming editions, making his great guide even better.
